My father Alexander Cherkassky grew up in Smila and later settled in Odessa, while his siblings lived in Odessa and Moscow. Alexander Cherkassky was a telecommunications engineer and served 20 years in the Soviet Air Force. He fought in WWII and retired as Lt. Col. in 1963. He then worked for the Odessa electrical power administration until his death in 1971.
